Picky Eater or Feeding Disorder? How to Tell the Difference

"Is my child just a picky eater, or is something more going on?" It's one of the most common questions families ask us at Green Light. The two can look similar on the surface, but the underlying cause, and the right next step, are very different.

What's the Difference Between Picky Eating and a Feeding Disorder?

Picky eating is a normal, if frustrating, part of childhood development. Most picky eaters have a limited range of preferred foods but still eat enough variety and volume to grow and thrive, and their food refusals tend to ease over time with patience and repeated, low-pressure exposure.

A pediatric feeding disorder is different. It involves a skill-based or sensory-based difficulty with eating that doesn't resolve on its own and often gets more limited over time rather than less. Feeding disorders can affect a child's nutrition, growth, and family mealtimes in ways that typical picky eating does not.

Signs Your Child May Have a Feeding Disorder (Not Just Picky Eating)

  • Eats fewer than 20 total foods, and loses foods over time without regaining them

  • Gags, chokes, or vomits regularly with certain textures

  • Refuses entire categories of food (such as all fruits, all meats, or all textures beyond purees)

  • Shows extreme distress, tantrums, or anxiety at mealtimes

  • Has a medical history that includes reflux, feeding tubes, prematurity, or oral motor delays

  • Isn't gaining weight or growing as expected

If several of these sound familiar, it's worth a conversation with your pediatrician and a feeding specialist, rather than waiting to see if your child grows out of it.

When Should You Seek Feeding Therapy?

A good rule of thumb: if mealtimes feel like a daily battle, if your child's list of accepted foods is shrinking, or if a doctor has flagged growth or nutrition concerns, it's time for an evaluation. Early support tends to be more effective and less stressful for the whole family than waiting.

How Feeding Therapy Helps

At Green Light, feeding therapy starts with understanding why eating is hard for your specific child, whether that's an oral motor skill gap, a sensory sensitivity, or a learned anxiety around mealtimes, and builds a plan around that root cause rather than forcing new foods. Our therapists work with families across Deerfield, Highland Park, and the rest of Chicago's North Shore, both in our clinic and in the home.

If you're unsure which category your child falls into, that's exactly what an evaluation is for. Reach out to Green Light Speech Therapy to talk through what you're seeing at home.
